Painting in the room
My name is Greta Virzbickytė, and I have completed both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the Department of Site-Specific Art at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
About my practice
Chance, unpredictability, and intuition are among the fundamental principles of my painting. In the creative process, I let go of the desire to fully control the outcome: I allow the paint to flow in its own direction, to mix, and to create unexpected forms and colour combinations. A mistake or failure is not a deviation that needs to be corrected. On the contrary, it is an opportunity to discover something that cannot be consciously planned. Unpredictability in my paintings is not a random process, but a consciously chosen artistic strategy. It allows me to approach what is difficult to grasp or put into words: images from the subconscious, intuitions, and inner states. Forms that emerge intuitively take shape through colour and form. I recognise certain combinations not because I have planned them in advance, but only after they have appeared on the canvas — like an image that gradually becomes familiar. During the creative process, I sometimes feel the urge to control a painting in the same way I want to control my own life. Yet there are things that, as the process unfolds, begin to control me rather than the other way around.
About this artwork+
This abstract painting displays a vibrant play of blues and purples, with touches of white and a hint of rust orange at the edge. The dominant features are the layers and textures that suggest depth and movement. Vertical and horizontal strokes create a feeling of structure within the chaos of colors. Dynamic drips and lines, some resembling grid patterns, traverse the canvas. The thick application of paint in some areas contrasts with sheer washes in others, suggesting an interplay between opacity and translucency. The overall effect is a visual exploration of emotion and perception through color and form.
