My name is Greta Virzbickytė, and I have completed both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the Department of Site-Specific Art at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
About my practice
Chance, unpredictability, and intuition are among the fundamental principles of my painting. In the creative process, I let go of the desire to fully control the outcome: I allow the paint to flow in its own direction, to mix, and to create unexpected forms and colour combinations. A mistake or failure is not a deviation that needs to be corrected. On the contrary, it is an opportunity to discover something that cannot be consciously planned. Unpredictability in my paintings is not a random process, but a consciously chosen artistic strategy. It allows me to approach what is difficult to grasp or put into words: images from the subconscious, intuitions, and inner states. Forms that emerge intuitively take shape through colour and form. I recognise certain combinations not because I have planned them in advance, but only after they have appeared on the canvas — like an image that gradually becomes familiar. During the creative process, I sometimes feel the urge to control a painting in the same way I want to control my own life. Yet there are things that, as the process unfolds, begin to control me rather than the other way around.
About this artwork+
The painting showcases a vibrant range of red and pink hues blending with strokes of deep blue. These colors form abstract shapes that suggest fluidity and movement, possibly evoking the sense of a body in flight. The textural details add depth, with the reds appearing sometimes opaque and other times transparent, allowing layers and underlying tones to peek through. Drips and streaks create a sense of motion, as though the pigments themselves are in the process of settling. The element of blue, despite its smaller presence, stands boldly against the warmer tones, adding to the dynamic and somewhat ethereal quality of the composition.
