My name is Greta Virzbickytė, and I have completed both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the Department of Site-Specific Art at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.

About my practice

Chance, unpredictability, and intuition are among the fundamental principles of my painting. In the creative process, I let go of the desire to fully control the outcome: I allow the paint to flow in its own direction, to mix, and to create unexpected forms and colour combinations. A mistake or failure is not a deviation that needs to be corrected. On the contrary, it is an opportunity to discover something that cannot be consciously planned. Unpredictability in my paintings is not a random process, but a consciously chosen artistic strategy. It allows me to approach what is difficult to grasp or put into words: images from the subconscious, intuitions, and inner states. Forms that emerge intuitively take shape through colour and form. I recognise certain combinations not because I have planned them in advance, but only after they have appeared on the canvas — like an image that gradually becomes familiar. During the creative process, I sometimes feel the urge to control a painting in the same way I want to control my own life. Yet there are things that, as the process unfolds, begin to control me rather than the other way around.

About this artwork+

The painting presents an abstract scene dominated by layers of vibrant colors, where the top section bathes in deep shades of blue evoking a sense of a vast, echoing sky. Below, a transformation occurs as the blue merges into a sea of green tones, suggesting a vast landscape or perhaps a view of the ocean from above. Vertical drips and streaks travel across the canvas, creating an impression of rain or cascading waterfalls. Interspersed within this green-blue world are shocks of rust and bright orange, providing a stark contrast that punctuates the piece like bursts of sound or flashes of light in a serene, silent place. The texture and the flow of colors enhance the feeling of an ethereal, fluid scene where silence and noise coexist and overlay each other in a harmonious paradox.
