My name is Greta Virzbickytė, and I have completed both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the Department of Site-Specific Art at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
About my practice
Chance, unpredictability, and intuition are among the fundamental principles of my painting. In the creative process, I let go of the desire to fully control the outcome: I allow the paint to flow in its own direction, to mix, and to create unexpected forms and colour combinations. A mistake or failure is not a deviation that needs to be corrected. On the contrary, it is an opportunity to discover something that cannot be consciously planned. Unpredictability in my paintings is not a random process, but a consciously chosen artistic strategy. It allows me to approach what is difficult to grasp or put into words: images from the subconscious, intuitions, and inner states. Forms that emerge intuitively take shape through colour and form. I recognise certain combinations not because I have planned them in advance, but only after they have appeared on the canvas — like an image that gradually becomes familiar. During the creative process, I sometimes feel the urge to control a painting in the same way I want to control my own life. Yet there are things that, as the process unfolds, begin to control me rather than the other way around.
About this artwork+
The painting displays a dynamic interplay of colors with deep blues, vibrant purples, and muted browns dominating the canvas. Large, bold patches of color are applied with a heavy, almost dripping effect, suggesting a sense of movement and fluidity. The blues and purples, in particular, evoke a cool, almost icy feel, which could be interpreted as the "trace of cold" mentioned in the title. These cooler tones contrast starkly with the earthy browns and soft, sandy hues, creating a visual temperature clash. The use of color blocking, along with the vertical and horizontal streaks, adds texture and depth, giving an impression of layers that could symbolize various depths of frost or the varying intensities of a chilling wind. Overall, the artwork has a minimalist yet expressive quality, engaging the viewer through its bold simplicity and intriguing use of color.
