My name is Greta Virzbickytė, and I have completed both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the Department of Site-Specific Art at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.

About my practice

Chance, unpredictability, and intuition are among the fundamental principles of my painting. In the creative process, I let go of the desire to fully control the outcome: I allow the paint to flow in its own direction, to mix, and to create unexpected forms and colour combinations. A mistake or failure is not a deviation that needs to be corrected. On the contrary, it is an opportunity to discover something that cannot be consciously planned. Unpredictability in my paintings is not a random process, but a consciously chosen artistic strategy. It allows me to approach what is difficult to grasp or put into words: images from the subconscious, intuitions, and inner states. Forms that emerge intuitively take shape through colour and form. I recognise certain combinations not because I have planned them in advance, but only after they have appeared on the canvas — like an image that gradually becomes familiar. During the creative process, I sometimes feel the urge to control a painting in the same way I want to control my own life. Yet there are things that, as the process unfolds, begin to control me rather than the other way around.

About this artwork+

The painting displays a vivid composition with a dynamic interplay of colors and textures. Prominent swathes of blue, green, and a hint of yellow create a bold visual impact. The application of the paint varies from smooth, large blocks to dripping lines that pull down towards the canvas’s bottom, suggesting a sense of motion or melting. Some areas show lighter washes of color, creating layers and depth, while others have a more saturated, opaque look. The colors overlap and interact, forming new hues and shapes at their intersections, giving the piece an organic, evolving feel. Patches of purple and hints of pink add complexity to the palette. The overall impression is abstract and open to interpretation, evoking different emotions and thoughts from the viewer.
