My name is Greta Virzbickytė, and I have completed both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the Department of Site-Specific Art at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.

About my practice

Chance, unpredictability, and intuition are among the fundamental principles of my painting. In the creative process, I let go of the desire to fully control the outcome: I allow the paint to flow in its own direction, to mix, and to create unexpected forms and colour combinations. A mistake or failure is not a deviation that needs to be corrected. On the contrary, it is an opportunity to discover something that cannot be consciously planned. Unpredictability in my paintings is not a random process, but a consciously chosen artistic strategy. It allows me to approach what is difficult to grasp or put into words: images from the subconscious, intuitions, and inner states. Forms that emerge intuitively take shape through colour and form. I recognise certain combinations not because I have planned them in advance, but only after they have appeared on the canvas — like an image that gradually becomes familiar. During the creative process, I sometimes feel the urge to control a painting in the same way I want to control my own life. Yet there are things that, as the process unfolds, begin to control me rather than the other way around.

About this artwork+

The painting reveals a layered composition of earthy and ethereal tones, primarily dominated by reds and blues. On the left, a large, rusty-red area bleeds downward, forming elongated drips that suggest a sense of movement or melting. Adjacent to this, a circular form, also in a muted red, houses faint silhouettes which might be interpreted as birds in mid-flight. To the right, a prominent indigo shape with similar dripping effects hovers over the canvas. This blue form, textured and patchy, interfuses with the red, mingling along the edges in a subtle dance of colors. Below these central figures, the colors bleed into one another, creating a reflective, mirroring effect that conjures notions of water or a blurred horizon. The overall mood is one of dreamlike tranquility, with elements seemingly floating in a liminal space.
